Annual Report of the BPP Saint Lucia Society 2017/2018

This report highlights details relating to the activities and achievements of the BPP Saint Lucia Society [hereinafter referred to as ‘the Society] for academic year 2017/2018.

The current executive of the Society took office in late September 2018 and we held our first meeting on 2nd October 2018. During that meeting we sought to brainstorm on ideas to engage members and the wider BPP student population.

The following was the calendar of activities suggested by members:

  1. Creole Day Celebrations at BPP – Friday 27th October 2017 5pm onwards
  2. Games Night – Date To be announced
  3. Club Night – one per quarter
  4. Independence Ball – 23rd February 2018 venue the SLU High Commission
  5. Thames River Caribbean Party Cruise – April 2018
  6. Barbeque at Richmond Park – Suggested date June 2018

The Creole Day idea was amalgamated with the Games Night and was held on Tuesday December 5th 2017 in the student’s lounge at the BPP Law School in Waterloo. The name of the event was changed to Creole Games Night as the date for International Creole Day has passed. We were able to engage a St. Lucian restaurant in Balham which provided the creole dishes which were well received by the students in attendance. We spent a total of £363.43 on this event and engaged with approximately 30 students which included students from all nationalities who attend our diverse university.

The Society was also able to execute a charity drive at the BPP University campuses in aid of the island of Dominica which was struck by Hurricane Irma in late September 2017. We collected a number of non-perishable items which students and members of staff donated to the cause. The items included clothing for men women and children, baby products, bed linen, canned food supplies, personal and household sanitary products and toys. All the items were packed into large boxes totalling ten and we handed them over to the Dominica High Commission on Monday 18th December 2017 in order to be shipped in time for Christmas to the people of Dominica.

In conjunction with and with support from the BPP Students’ Association, the Society was able to execute the Thames Tropical Party Cruise on Thursday March 15th 2018. Although this event was not as successful in numbers as we had hoped we able to engage approximately 70 students in attending. They represented most if not all of the nationalities who attend our university.

The final event the Society executed was a drinks and eats session at the St. Lucia High Commission on Monday July 9th 2018. This event was well attended by the remaining St. Lucian students at BPP University and was very successful. We were able to engage approximately 20 students for this event and we spent a total of £101.79 on the event. The St. Lucia High Commissioner was very happy to host us and was very pleased with the engagement.

We were note able to execute the Independence Ball due to lack of interest from the student body; and we did not hold any of the club nights as finding the best date to accommodate the most students proved difficult due to our student commitments.
