Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a form of gender-based violence and a human rights violation, estimated to have affected more than 230 million women and girls around the globe. In 2025, over 4 million girls are still at risk of FGM round the world.
To mark the United Nation's International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM (6 February) we want to start a conversation around FGM and to help our BPP members understand what we, as members of the public, can potentially do to help eradicate this harmful practice.
At this workshop run by postgraduate law student volunteers supporting the work of BPP's Social Impact team, you will learn about:
- The short and long term consequences of FGM
- The legal position on FGM in the UK
- How you can help raise awareness about FGM
- Where you can direct someone to for support if they are at risk of FGM
The workshop lasts approximately 1 hour; presenters will be available for a further 10 minutes to answer any questions.
Please note: student presenter volunteers will not be able to provide specific / personal legal advice during the session. They will provide information on where to go to get help from qualified
